A Nutrition Coach Showed Me a Simple Morning Routine That Helped Me Feel Lighter, Steadier, and More Like Myself Again
The old me — before I changed my mornings
Hi, I’m Denise. I’m 54, a mom of two grown kids, and a grandma to three little ones who keep me on my toes.
A little over a year ago, I had a moment I still think about. I stepped on the scale, and the number staring back at me wasn’t just higher than I expected — it was higher than I’d ever seen. I stood there for a while, like maybe it would change if I waited long enough.
It didn’t.
I’d tried the usual things over the years. Strict meal plans. Intense workout routines I dreaded. Cutting out anything that felt like a treat. I’d stick with it for a few weeks, see a little progress, and then slowly slide right back to where I started. It felt less like a willpower problem and more like my body just wasn’t cooperating with me anymore.
The shift happened after a conversation with a friend of mine who works as a nutrition coach. She explained something I’d never really thought about — that after 40 or 50, it’s not always about doing more. Sometimes it’s about being more consistent with a few small habits, especially first thing in the morning, instead of white-knuckling your way through another restrictive diet.
She walked me through a simple morning routine — nothing extreme, nothing that meant giving up the foods I love or spending an hour at the gym before work. Just a small, consistent habit to start the day.
I was skeptical at first. I’d heard a lot of promises before. But it was easy enough to stick with, so I gave it a real try.
Over the following months, things slowly started to shift. My clothes fit more comfortably. I wasn’t dragging by 3pm anymore. I could keep up with my grandkids at the park without needing a break every few minutes. And honestly, just feeling more like myself again meant more to me than any number on a scale.
When friends ask what changed, I tell them the truth — it started with a simple morning routine and a shift in how I thought about my metabolism, instead of constantly fighting it.
I usually just point people to the same video my friend originally sent me, so they can see it and decide for themselves.
I don’t know how long it’ll stay up, but it’s worth six minutes of your morning to watch.
Since making this simple change to my mornings, I’ve been able to:
- Cut way back on intense workouts I used to dread
- Move my body only when I actually feel like it — and still have more energy
- Keep eating meals I actually enjoy
- Stop obsessing over every little thing on my plate
- Feel more comfortable and confident day to day
- Get compliments from people who’ve noticed the difference
The biggest thing this simple morning routine taught me? It had nothing to do with punishing myself — not with extreme diets, not with grueling workouts, not with cutting out every carb in sight.
It’s a lot simpler than most of us have been led to believe, and I think that’s exactly why so many of us struggle to keep weight off long-term — we’re working against our bodies instead of with them.
Watch the video that walked me through it. It’s six minutes, and it’s the reason my mornings look completely different now.
